United Potato Growers LogoUnited Potato Growers of America is a federated farmers cooperative that focuses on managing national potato supply so as to positively affect grower economic success. It is through United membership that potato growers are empowered to better understand and act upon demand for their product.
RETAIL PROMOTIONS FALL - Retail promotions have fallen below the level of last year for the past five weeks. It is important to note that prices are higher at the shipping point level this year compared to the summer of 2009. As shipments and supplies are tighter, there is less of a push coming from sales organizations. Growers will need to work with their shippers as new crop potatoes come onto the market to make sure that the right level of promotion is occurring to keep the volume of product to consumers flowing smoothly. The time to plan these promotions will be several weeks before anticipated surges in volume, not once the market has become accustomed to lower volumes and sellers are forced to slash prices to try to increase demand on a moment’s notice.

Most of the struggles we face in life carryover from work to our personal challenges. As I think about the upcoming potato crop transition from the 2009 to the 2010 crop, I keep coming back to my personal struggles with weight.
